Bike-loving locals head to Park City for bike-centric film festival
The media is saying that BikeDance was a bit of snoozer this year, what with the economy and all. That's a bit funny, because most years, it's an event that overshadows every other event in Park City. But not this year. Deep in O'Shucks bar, a few locals - all of whom love to bike - were preparing to change that. Projectors and screens were put into place and tested. Monitors were tied together and cables were strung trough the dusty rafters, sound buffers, and memorabilia that passes for a ceiling at the local bar.
Back at White Pine Touring, the reception was being put into place. Some called it a reception the majority would call it a party. Donated food and beverages from White Pine were put into place, while Cannondale's Doug Dalton, the mastermind behind this event, was upstairs donning his finest BikeDance attire while the final beers were iced and the last bit of salsa stirred and presented. Signature BikeDance 09 beer coozys were placed out and the party was ready to start.
As the party started, White Pine filled with the hum of local voices, as more faithful two-wheeled brothers and sisters arrived. Eventually Dr. Jon of Dharma Wheels Cyclery and Silver Creek Dental (Jon and his wife Kim run both businesses out of the same space) arrived fully equipped in black leather with an official BikeDance 09 badge. They even had Guns'N'Roses blaring from the stereo mounted on his bike rack; soon the party was in full swing. Within one short hour about 60 or so people had put the majority of 100 beers to rest and cleaned out the appetizer buffet. Everyone was fueled up and it was time to ride!
As the crowd rolled out of White Pine into the parking lot it became apparent that the BikeDance party formed a very respectable "Critical Mass". In the true spirit of Park City, there were a gaggle of riders on dirt jumpers, downhill rigs, cross-country race bikes, road bikes and custom townies. Even George, a longtime local and ardent cyclist, arrived on his unicycle. The group left White Pine and crossed Bonanza Drive, bringing BikeDance traffic to a halt. Riders carved big left-hand arcs onto Main Street as bells, hoots and hollers touted our arrival to Park City's Main Street and the heart of the BikeDance Film Festival.
The crowed burst into O'Shucks and took over. Bartenders scrambled to keep up with the free Schooner tickets pouring over the bar like our own private currency. Folks settled into their groove as the screen was put into place and the first of two films for the evening rolled. DH Productions' epic mountain bike adventure, "Latitudes", was cued up. Dalton got on the mic and welcomed everyone to the first annual BikeDance. Cheers rang out in the bar and glasses were raised high. The opening scene played out, showing riders Randy Spangler, Wayne Goss, Josh Bender, and Jim DeChamp shredding in the beautiful deserts of the southwestern U.S. People cheered, and gave shouts of awe and encouragement. Clearly the party was rolling. Our crowd was stoked and showing it. The graceful editing and beautiful shots Don Hampton had laced together mesmerized everyone in attendance.
As Latitudes ended, Dalton got back on the mic and began what was supposed to be a lottery drawing. Instead of calling out ticket numbers and waiting for hands to fumble through pockets, Dalton announced that, due to the generosity of our sponsors -- Cannondale, SRAM, Magura, FSA, Utah cyclocross, Cyclocrossworld.com, E13, Leer, and Highland bike park -- everyone would be receiving a party favor! The crowd erupted once more and people scrambled to the back of the bar where a 12-foot bench lay covered in schwag.
Dalton announced the second film for the evening: Another DH Productions film called "9 Ball Diaries". It documents Tim Johnson's meteoric rise in cyclocross.
As the night rolled on, an encore showing of Latitudes was started as bartenders' poured more golden beer from their from taps. More toast and cheers were made, and smiles and laughs could be seen and heard all over the bar. Our community had come together to not only support a non-profit that keeps us in trails (Carol Potter from the Mountain Trails Foundation, a non-profit trail advocacy group, benefitted from the $10.00 donation each attendant paid upon entry), but to support each other. Although BikeDance over shadows Park City for 10 days every winter, BikeDance pushed aside the international event and showed the world what a few good souls, dedicated cyclists, and creative minds can do. A big thanks to all the sponsors: Don Hampton and DH Productions for donating their great films, O'Shucks Bar for providing a venue that will be a staple of BikeDance for years to come, White Pine Touring for hosting the pre party and providing the AV equipment, and the Sponsors who generously donated product for the giveaway. BE INDEPENDENT, AND RIDE YOUR BIKE!!!!!
